Beginner’s Guide to Watching Good Boxing Matches

With the highly anticipated Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor match slated for August 26, after ample back and forth trash talk between the two beginning as far back as July 2015, boxing has become a trending and newsworthy sport that has almost everyone talking. There is no time like the present to get into the game!

What’s the profile of a “good” fight?

Do the fighters in question have something to prove or are they looking for a payday? The fight likely won’t be a very exciting or good fight if he’s closing in on retirement. However, if there is a lot on the line, the fighter has something to prove and a win could bring on bigger and better things, the fight will likely be explosive.

Check in on the fighters’ styles. Are they two counterpunchers? The fight probably won’t have you on the edge of your seat, but if you put a boxer-puncher in the ring with a counterpuncher – the fight will not only keep you on the edge of your seat, but you’ll be cheering for one fighter or the other.

Do talented fighters make good fights?

Not always because good fights are about good match-ups. Like discussed previously, if you put two fighters in the ring and their style’s don’t exactly mesh, even a good fighter will put you to sleep. Find fighters with opposing styles that compliment each other. See: Wiki article on Boxing Styles.

How often do “good” fights happen?

Don’t wait for just the Mayweather/McGregor fight to happen, good (and even great) fights happen all the time!  The reason you may not have seen the hype around many of these fights or promotions can be attributed to the international appeal of the sport itself. Most of these great matches are just a click away, many being available on YouTube within 24 hours.

For these reasons and more, fans around the world are excited about the Mayweather/McGregor fight; without a doubt the most anticipated fight in years. It happens on August 26, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV.
