Top NBA Teams: #8 Los Angeles Lakers

Popular. Scary. Legendary. Historic. These are only some of the many words that can be used to describe the Los Angeles Lakers. This past offseason changed a lot for the Lakers. LeBron James chose to sign with them and that reignited the fire within the fans. Along with many young stars such as Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, and of course Kyle Kuzma, this team has an absurd amount of potential carried by one of the best leaders to ever play the game. Nevertheless, one season good season is not the only reason they place in FanWide’s Top Ten NBA Teams ranking.

The Lakers have always been one of the most exciting teams to watch. The organization was founded in 1947, the second year of the NBA, which ultimately gives them an advantage over almost all teams as their franchise timeline goes back further. Kobe Bryant, easily one of the best and by far the most competitive player to set foot on an NBA court, spent his whole career with LA and recently retired in 2016. Other legends such as Shaquille O’Neal, the whole Showtime Lakers (Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), Wilt Chamberlain, and many more have all put on a Lakers jersey. You will never be disappointed watching a Lakeshow…trust me. No wonder why the Lakers were able to place 8th in FanWide’s Top Ten NBA Teams ranking.

The NBA is unique in many aspects of fan support. It is very difficult to rank a team based solely off of their on or off court success. Therefore, FanWide chose to use data from both categories to create a ranking that is one of a kind. All the metrics used in this ranking were weighted equally in order to ensure there was a balance between the different factors. Additionally, all of the metrics were applicable to all 30 of the NBA teams. As a result, our top ten ranking is the most balanced and unique ranking for NBA teams. More information about our methodology can be found here. FanWide will be releasing the top ten NBA fan clubs in the next few weeks.

Fan Clubs on FanWide: 7 (13th)

The Lakers are within the top half of the league with fan clubs registered on FanWide. Both old and new fans gather at watch parties to support their team and create a stadium away from the stadium. Yet, this number can definitely be much higher. Lakers fans! Make sure to register your club on FanWide and continue to help support your team!

NBA Championships Since 1977: 10 (1st)

Since the merger between the NBA and the ABA, the Lakers have simply been, for a lack of better words, killing it. They place 1st in the league for championships with a whopping 10 titles. Before their dominance in the early 2000s, they were unstoppable in the 1980s. This effort was lead by Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and James Worthy. Once the 2000s hit, Kobe Bryant absolutely dominated the league by winning another 5 rings. With LeBron now on the Lakers, he will definitely look to continue his streak of already 8 straight finals appearances.

All-Stars (last 5 years): 3 (22th)

The last 5 years account back to the 2014 All-Star Game. This was the end of Kobe’s career and he was struggling with an achilles injury. Between then and this season, the Lakers have been in full rebuilding mode, and let me tell you, it is definitely working. As of now, they have a roster full of potential all-stars. Let’s just wait a few years and watch this number skyrocket.

National Games Televised Last Season (ABC, ESPN, TNT, NBA TV): 43 (1st)

All I can say is just wow…1st in the league for nationally televised games this season. However, this is definitely not a surprise. Besides the addition of LeBron to the roster and excitement and marketability that comes with him, young stars such as Brandon Ingram and Kyle Kuzma lit up the league last. On top of that, Lonzo Ball has been filling his father’s words of how great he is with some excellent games. This is a good time to be a Lakers fans.

Wins (last 5 years): 126 (30th)

Like the all-star metric, this stat covers a rough period for the Lakers putting them last in the league. As Kobe neared the end his career and suffered a tragic achilles injury, he had to sit out most of the games. After his retirement, the Lakers were rebuilding their team in search of new young talent. The one thing about young talent is that it takes time to reach its potential. Nevertheless that is exactly what is happening right now. Additionally, being ranked 30th in this category, yet still placing 8th in these overall rankings just shows how dominant the Lakers truly are. When this number goes up in a few years, the Lakers will practically seem immortal.

Attendance (average): 18,934 (10th)

Watching the Lakers is so thrilling that it has been named the Lakeshow. Fans from not only LA rush to Staples Center to watch the purple and gold excite the crowd night after night. The only issue with having such a hot location like LA is that people do not always have time go to Staples Center, sit down, and enjoy the game as everyone is always in a rush. The Lakers still manage to draw in a large crowd as they average 90% of their maximum capacity to be filled.

Value (in billions): 3.3 (2nd)

There is absolutely no reason to why the Lakers should not be valued this high. If it were up to me, I would value the team even higher, but I’m not Forbes. All the metrics used in this ranking point exactly to why $3.3 billion well deserved by the Lakers. Their historical dominance and legacy with the addition of being located in Los Angeles, and having so much potential to keep getting better all contribute to this value. Still need more reasons? Well then consider the fact that many current NBA superstars have the Lakers at the top of their list for free agency as it is an organization that everyone wants to play for. Who wouldn’t want their jersey hanging in the rafters of the Staples Center?

Total Followers (in millions): 35.97 (1th)

Publicity is definitely not something the Lakers lack. Being located in Los Angeles, one of the more media-savvy and technologically advanced cities, it is not a surprise that social media is just one of the many aspects at which the Lakers excel in. They have 7.8 million followers on Instagram, 7.52 million followers on Twitter, and 21 million followers on Facebook. The 21 million Facebook followers just show that a lot of Lakers fans are from earlier in time and have stuck around.

Two words. LeBron James. This man will definitely carry the Lakers to even more success than they already have. Not only will he add onto his personal legacy, but he will contribute great things to the Lakers organization and leave his mark in their books, just like the other legends before him did. Keep your eyes open, because LA is going for it all. Isn’t it a great time to be a Lakers fan?  Find other Lakers fan in your city with FanWide.
